Proper Technique for Adding Chlorine Tablets to Your Pool
June 25, 2018by SEOteamPOOL AND SPA
In our previous two blog posts we talked about pool installation timelines and the value of purchasing a robotic pool cleaner.
At the same time, you also understand that keeping your pool clean from debris and dirt is just part of the equation. You’ll need to make sure chlorine and pH levels remain stable.
Why do I need to add chlorine to my pool?
Chlorine is among the most popular pool sanitizers available. It’s effecting, it’s powerful and it will help kill bacteria and viruses, which will help keep you, your family and your friends safe while you’re swimming.
How much chlorine do I need to add?
As a general rule of thumb, the chlorine concentration in your swimming pool should be 1 part per million. It should not go higher than 3 parts per million.
Keeping your chlorine levels within this range is an ideal way to keep your pool sanitized without needing to worry about things like nose, eye and throat irritation. Again, if your chlorine levels are too high, it will be unsafe to use the pool. More is not always better.
How can I tell where my chlorine levels are?
This one is easy. You can determine your chlorine levels by using a pool water testing kit. This will tell you the levels of the chlorine and it will also let you know the pH balance levels of the water. Pool test kits are available at any pool supply store.
Proper way to add chlorine tablets
If you’ve grown accustomed to using chlorine granules (which can be added directly to the water), you may be wondering if you can just toss in a handful of chlorine tablets and call it a day.
That’s actually a very, very bad idea.
Floating dispenser
One of the easiest ways to use chlorine tablets in the pool at your Denver, Colorado home is to purchase a floating chlorine dispenser. They’re low maintenance, they’re convenient and they can be a great choice for pools that do not have a liner.
Place tablets in the skimmer basket
A second way to accomplish this is to place the chlorine tablets directly into the swimming pool’s skimmer basket. Water will flow over the tablets while the filter is running and the clean, chlorinated water will be pushed back into your pool via the return jets.
The automatic chlorinator
Lastly, if you don’t want to mess with a floating dispenser and you don’t want to deal with the skimmer basket, an automatic chlorinator may be the way to go. Not only can you load it with tablets, you can set it to keep your pool’s chlorine levels between 1ppm and 3ppm.
